The Day of Atonement

The April edition of the magazine has the first of our two part feature on the Day of Atonement or Yom Kippûr. The Day of Atonement is intimately connected with the Feast of Tabernacles, forgiveness of sins and the sounding of the Trumpets.

Trumpet judgments on Israel

Significantly the trumpet section in the book of Revelation commences with the Yom Kippûr ritual but instead of the priestly blessing (and forgiveness) being pronounced on the nation of Israel the angel executes retribution (Rev.8:1-6). A series of escalating calamities befall the people until the introduction of the eschaton during the seventh trumpet.

The first Trumpet

In October 1973, towards the end of the administration of Golda Meir, war broke out on Yom Kippûr the holiest day of the Jewish year. Israel was attacked by Egypt and Syria on the Day of Atonement. This was God's answer to the prayers for national forgiveness.

This was the divine response to the nation of Israel – the trumpets commenced on Yom Kippûr – no forgiveness until there is true repentance from the heart and acceptance of the Messiah – Jesus Christ. The sixth trumpet is shortly to sound. Our online article (also available in PDF) explains the origins of Yom Kippûr -part two (next quarter) examines the N.T. application.
